My car is now on the net

Today I received my usb evdo card from Millenicom. They are a reseller of Verizon mobile broadband. The reason I went with them is that there is no contract.

One reason for having this card is internet radio stations when I’m driving. Another is to be able to check e-mail or surf the web when I’m at a place where I don’t have internet access.

Starting from scratch

Well, I decided to use a new kernel. So while all the software is still installed, I have no networking and I’m sure there are other kernel modules I’m missing that need to be recompiled as well.

Hopefully I’ll get the networking up tomorrow which will speed up the rest of the process.

The carputer is in the car.

I put the computer in the car and found out the touchscreen drivers weren’t installed in my current install. Then I found out for some reason they are inverted sometimes but not others.

So I’m basically going to have to work on the basic install to get the touchpad working 100% of the time.

I haven’t gotten the elmscan working yet in the system. nghost is reporting that the plugin isn’t installed but it reports seeing it if I look at the command line. Not sure what is up with that. Its just another thing to work on.

I checked the weather (I have a usb wireless card that gets a decent signal back to the router in the house).

I should have, but didn’t, check the music out.

The GPS also didn’t appear working.

So, there is a lot of ironing out of the system, but I think it is going to stay in the car and I’ll fix it in place so it will just get more and more functional as I fix the problems.

Looks like I’ll have lots of stuff to do during lunch breaks.

Carputer about to go in the car

I’ve had it in the car before, but never actually had it set up to do anything but boot.

Tomorrow I’m going to try to put it in again and see what happens.  This time music and gps and obdii should be working (though I can’t really check obdii until it is in the car.)

Stay tuned.  I hope to have a video and pictures up soon if it works.

Very tired. Wordpress widgets are hard/easy

I’m very tired now. I’ve just finished looking through documentation and writing a widget for wordpress. It is really simple once you have done it. But it is kind of hard to pull all the info you need to do it the first time.

Great article I came across about old tech still being used today

This article brought back memories of some of the old devices we used (dot matrix printers, etc.) and where they are still used today.
I encourage you to go read it. I expect you will start to get a bit of respect for these old timers that just won’t go away.

Check out the link for the new carputer page

I finally decided to start my own site to document some of the things I do for fun.  The carputer is the one I’m having the most fun with.

To start I have created a page of the current status of my carputer.  The project is several years old.  I pretty much have it done.  I’m trying to find my iGuidance disk and my wireless usb adapter.  When I do I’m going to finally plug it in to my car for its first time.

I hope I can find them soon.  If not I’ll probaby have to buy another wireless adapter and another copy of iGuidance.

I’m a member over at mp3car and learned almost all of what I know from the forums there.  Check it out if you get a chance.
